Text: “Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations He hath made in the earth.”
Psalm 46:8.
Good morning, saved, secured, and safe-guarded Christian! The works of the Lord God Almighty, Jehovah, and especially in His only begotten Son, the Living Lord Jesus Christ, should encourage us who are born again of His Spirit; and lift us up above all afflictions and oppressive depressions whenever the enemies of our Spiritually regenerate souls seek to pull us down.
IF we are genuinely saved: then we are not
only saved, but secured for Eternity in the Family of the Lord, and shall
always be safe-guarded by His Omnipotent power.
Can we who enjoy such Eternal benefits not now lift a word of open
praise to God for His grace? Indeed we
can: ‘Hallelujah! The Lord God omnipotent
reigns forever! Amen!’
Verse 8.
“Come, behold (look, and understand) the works of the Lord. It were well if we also carefully noted the providential dealing
of our covenant God and were quick to perceive His hand in the battles of His
church. Whenever we read history, it
should be with this verse sounding in our ears.
We should read the newspaper in the same spirit, to see how the Head of
the church rules the nations for His people’s good, as Joseph governed Egypt
for the sake of Israel.” (C.H. Spurgeon,
Treasury of David, page 221)
So often we forget the Gospel story of
‘the ten lepers’. Ten were healed, but
only one came back to give Christ Jesus thanks.
(Luke 17:12-19)
“And one of them, when he saw that he was
healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God.” (Luke 17:15)
“And Jesus answering said, Were there not
ten cleansed? But where are the
nine? There are not found that returned
to give glory to God, save this stranger.
And He said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee
whole.” (Luke 17:17-19)
Verse 8. “Come, behold the works of the
Lord. God looks that His works should be well
observed, and especially when He hath wrought any great deliverance for His
people. Of all things, he cannot abide
to be forgotten.” (John Trapp 1601-1699)
In this increasingly crass, God-rejecting
21st Century, sinful mankind thinks he/she is in control of things
within any given sphere of human influence and governance. However, this is only a lie which Satan,
‘...the god of this world...’, has used to blind the minds and hearts of
reprobate societies, in order to lead their immortal souls further and further
down the broad road to a Christ-rejecter’s Hell. Millions in so-called modern societies today,
seem to be now more interested in celebrating Halloween, than worshipping the
Living Lord God on the Lord’s day.
Such, Spiritually blinded individuals and
nations seem totally unaware of the insult they are hurling at our Holy Lord
God Almighty – and deaf and blind to the certain Eternal desolations that must
soon come. Oh that nations and
individual people might awaken, Spiritually, to the sinful state they are
wallowing in today!
Verse 8. “What desolations He hath made in
the earth. The destroyers He destroys, the desolators
He desolates. How forcible is the verse
at this date! The ruined cities of
Assyria, Babylon, Petra, Bashan, Canaan, are our instructors, and in tables of
stone record the doings of the Lord. In every
place where His cause and crown have been disregarded, ruin has surely
followed; sin has been a blight on nations and left their palaces to lie in
heaps.
Ye gloomy piles, ye tombs of living men,
Ye sepulchres of womanhood, or worse;
Ye refuges of lies, soon may ye fall,
And ‘mid your ruins may the owl, and bat,
And dragon find congenial resting-place.”
(Charles Haddon Spurgeon, The Treasury of
David, page 221)
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for
whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he/she that soweth to the flesh shall of
the flesh reap corruption; but he/she that soweth to the Spirit shall reap life
everlasting. And let us not be weary in
well-doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faith not.” (Galatians 6:7-9)
For the Christ-rejecting individuals and
nations, those who would rather run after false religions, superstitions, and
humanistic philosophies – this verse from the book of Galatians holds a severe
threefold message of warning from God:
1. An Unheeded Warning:
“Be not deceived”!
2. An Unalterable Truth:
“God is not mocked”!
3. An Unchangeable Law:
“Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap”!
The works of the Lord are well manifested
for us – in Creation; in His Redemption of fallen Adam; and in the Sovereign
grace He bestows upon His elect people, through the full Atonement Sacrifice of
God the Son, Christ Jesus. Who dares to
ignore such Divine works, without incurring a fearful dread of Hell and the
Lake of Fire which must surely follow?
Fallen mankind throughout the world are
left without any excuse, God’s workings with mankind are well documented and
recorded in His Holy Bible.
Verse 8. “...What desolations He hath made
in the earth. Desolations by wars; how many fields have
been drenched with blood, and composted with carcasses; how many millions of
men have been cut off in all ages by the edge of the sword! Desolations by famine; ...Desolations by
plague and pestilence; which have swept away, as our story tells us, eight
hundred thousand in one city.” (Joseph
Hall 1574-1656)
Thought: All saved by Christ – are saved, secured and
safe-guarded from all desolations! Come
join us in the Eternal Security of the Lord Jesus Christ, today?
