Text: “The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him;
and He will show them His Covenant.”
Good morning, secret-sharing Christian! You and
I who are privileged to have been redeemed by the precious shed Blood of Jesus
Christ, the Son of God, are ‘secret-sharing Christians’. But, what does
this term ‘secret-sharing Christians’ mean? Read on, genuine
truth-seeking Christian, for all shall be shortly revealed.
“The secret things belong unto the Lord our God; but
those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever,
that we may do all the words of this law.” (Deuteronomy 29:29)
Dictionary Definition:
‘Secret’ - (adjective) kept back from the knowledge of others;
guarded against discovery or observation; unrevealed,
unidentified; hidden; secluded; recondite, occult; preserving privacy.
(The Chambers Dictionary, page 1494)
Verse 14. “The secret of
the Lord is with them that fear Him; and He will show them His Covenant.”
If we are blessed by God with His gift of saving
faith, our first response should be to fear, or give full reverence to, the
Giver of such an Eternal benefit. When, by His grace, we do so, the Lord
opens up to us the secrets of the Covenant He has made with mankind, His
Creation, and all the wonders of His promises to us. These Covenant
‘secrets’ are never revealed to the reprobate, but only to those whom God has
chosen ‘…from before the foundations of the world…’
God’s secrets are Supernatural
secrets, revealed to souls that are Supernaturally regenerated by Him, and
therefore the natural man cannot receive them.
“But the natural man receiveth not (does not receive,
nor can ever receive) the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness
unto him; neither can he know them, because they are Spiritually
discerned.” (1 Corinthians 2:14)
The Lord God Jehovah, Creator of all things, the One
true Lord God Almighty, reveals unto ‘His people’ the Eternal secrets of His
Divine Covenant. Praise God He does!
Dictionary Definition:
Covenant - (Noun) mutual agreement; the writing containing the
agreement; an engagement entered into between God and a person or a people, a
dispensation, testament. (a binding contract). (Chambers Dictionary, page
377)
“As for Me, behold, My Covenant is with thee, and thou
shalt be a father of many nations.” (Genesis 17:4)
“And I will establish My Covenant between Me and thee
and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting Covenant, to be
a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.” (Genesis 17:7)
This was the Covenant the Lord God made with us
through Abraham. God revealed His Covenant to one He had chosen out of
many others. The Lord does exactly the same today; He reveals His New
Testament (Covenant) to all those He has chosen to give to His Son, Jesus; and
all that God the Father has given to God the Son will come to Him - and He will
therefore, ‘…in no wise cast them out…’ when we do.
“All that the Father giveth Me shall come to Me; and
him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out, for I came down from Heaven,
not to do mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me. And this is
the Father’s will (Covenant) which hath sent Me, that of all which He hath
given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last
day.” (John 6:37-40)
Many professing to the
‘Christians’ today, in this 21st Century, fail to grasp or
understand this teaching. By opposing it, they oppose the very will of
God Himself. God is Sovereign. Mankind is merely fallen and needs
to be redeemed.
Verse 14. “The secret of
the Lord is with them that fear Him. Some read it ‘the friendship’; it signifies familiar intercourse,
confidential intimacy, and select fellowship. This is a great
secret. Carnal minds cannot guess what is intended by it, and even
believers cannot explain it in words, for it must be felt to be known.”
(C.H. Spurgeon, Treasury of David, page 128)
“There is a vital sense in which ‘the natural man
discerneth not the things of the Spirit of God’ and in which all the realities
of Christian experience are utterly hid from his perceptions. To speak to
him of communion with God, of the sense of pardon, of the lively expectation of
Heaven, of the witness of the Holy Ghost, of the struggles of the Spiritual
life, would be like reasoning with a blind man about colours, or with one deaf
about musical harmony.” (John Morison 1829)
God’s Holy secrets are shared with those who worship
Him in sincere reverence; and seek to serve Christ Jesus - no matter how the
world or carnal dignitaries may object.
“Abraham walked with God, and God made him one of His
privy council; ‘Shall I hide from Abraham the thing which I do?’ (Gen.24:40 and
18:17). God doth sometimes sweetly unbosom Himself to the soul in prayer,
and in the Holy Supper, as Christ made Himself known to the disciples in the
breaking of the bread.” (Thomas Watson 1690?)
Thought: True reverence of God
receives Covenant secrets from His Word. Let us seek a new sanctification
that might hear His Voice afresh today. Amen.
